The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing him under an unavoidable threat of capture. Chess puzzles start with a grid in which each player has 16 chess pieces: a king, a queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops and eight pawns. Each of the six types of pieces moves differently.
