Kemenche or kemençe is a name used for various types of bowed string musical instruments having their origin in appsfire the eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Greece, Iran, Turkey, Armenia, and areas adjacent to the Black Sea.
These instruments are folk instruments, usually having three strings and played upright with their tails on the musician's knee. The name Kemençe derives from the Persian Kamancheh and simply means "little bow".
