If anyone reports that the app has tested positive, the app signals will search for other app users who have shared that signal. BLE signals are time stamped and the app estimates the proximity of the two devices based on signal strength. If the time frame is at least 15 minutes and the estimated distance is less than six feet, the other user receives a notification of potential exposure. No names! There is no site!
The COVIDWISE BLE framework will run in the background, even if the exposure notification application is closed. This will not drain the device's battery at the same rate as with other apps that use normal Bluetooth and / or open and continue to work.
How COVIDWISE protects your privacy:
VDH takes your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. This is why we have chosen to use the Apple and Google BLE framework. No personal data or location tracking occurs in this app. In fact, VDH does not need to know where you are or who you are for COVIDWISE to work. If you are close enough to another app user, BLE will share signals with that user.
The lab results of all those who test positive for COVID-19 are sent to the VDH. It is not related to the application. Our staff follow up on those who have been reported infected, based on the information in the lab report. As a tribute to all app users, VDH will verify positive tests and then provide COVIDWISE users with a personal Download COVIDWISE identification number (PIN). You must use this PIN code to report a positive application result. This prevents people from falsely reporting positive results, which can lead to false exposure notifications. VDH wants all app users to be confident that when they are potentially exposed to COVID-19 through the app, it is a real event.
If you have an Apple or Google operating system installed on your device, you may have noticed that the exposure notifications are now listed. You cannot enable this feature until you download the Virginia COVIDWISE app. Apple and Google will remove exposure notification service tools from their operating systems once the pandemic reaches such a point that public health does not require the use of this technology.
