Recent research suggests that exposure to blue light before bed can disrupt your natural (circadian) rhythm and cause an inability to fall asleep.
The cause is the photoreceptors in the eye, which are called melanopsins. This receptor is sensitive to a narrow band of blue light in the 460 to 480 nanometer range that can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone responsible for healthy sleep-wake cycles.
Experimental scientific studies have shown that the average person who reads on a tablet or smartphone for a few hours before bed may find their sleep is delayed by about an hour.
